Indigenous Communities

Land, water, and air is inseparable from human health

Moms Clean Air Force is committed to exposing environmental injustices in Indigenous communities, which are disproportionately impacted by polluting industries, like pipelines, mines, and waste incinerators, as well as global warming. In our efforts to take a stand against environmental discrimination, our Indigenous Communities team works to hold federal agencies accountable for lack of resources, educate communities about environmental health harms, advocate for Tribal sovereignty, and fight for clean air and climate solutions to protect not just community health but Indigenous cultures and knowledge systems.

We are also working directly with Tribes in states across the country. Find out how you can get involved.

What We’re Working On

Partnership With National Tribal Air Association

Moms Clean Air Force works with the National Tribal Air Association (NTAA) to educate families and government officials about how exposure to air pollution and the effects of global warming impact health in Indigenous communities. We participate in the National Tribal Air Forum annually, to connect with our Tribal partners, share our perspective at the intersection of clean air, climate, and children’s health, and offer opportunities for advocacy.

Each year, NTAA publishes the Status of Tribal Air Report, which details the successes and challenges of Tribal air programs and priorities for improving air quality in the coming year. Moms Clean Air Force uses this analysis in our advocacy to Congress and EPA calling for necessary resources and funding to achieve Tribal air goals.

Take Action

Indigenous Climate Displacement

Global warming poses threats to ways of life and health of Indigenous families both in the U.S. and abroad. Climate-fueled wildfires, extreme heat, and destructive storms are forcing the relocation of Indigenous communities to and within the U.S. This in turn can contribute to the erosion of Tribal cultures, religion, and knowledge systems.

Climate displacement of Tribes can take an extreme toll on families, communities, and countries. There are no simplistic answers to this complex problem, but there are simple values—namely, humanity and compassion—with which we should treat families uprooted from their homes, lives, and traditions.

Take Action

Indigenous Maternal Health

While pregnancy is a time of extreme sensitivity for all, Indigenous mothers in the U.S. experience high maternal and infant mortality rates—they’re twice as likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than white women. Air pollution exacerbates existing health disparities, disproportionately affecting Indigenous mothers and their infants.

As part of our Indigenous Maternal Health work, we create and share educational resources to support pregnant people in Tribal communities. How Mercury Poisoning Works reminds pregnant people to check for mercury advisories in their state before consuming fish, which could be polluted with this potent neurotoxin. Pregnancy, the Placenta, and Pollution gives commonsense advice for avoiding harmful heavy metals and toxic chemicals that could hurt a growing fetus.
