What We’re Working On

Tell Governor Abbott: Lead on Climate Safety
It is more important than ever for states to act on climate change. States—and their governors—can be powerful leaders in building a clean energy economy. That’s why we’re asking Governor Abbott to step up to slash climate pollution, protect children’s health, and ensure clean air for all. Our future depends on it.

Events and Resources in Texas
Why We Care
Although Texas produces the most wind energy of any state, it also leads the country in oil and gas production. In 2021, Texas emitted 623 million metric tons of CO2—more than double the second highest emitting state.
We also have a petrochemical problem. Dozens of refineries and chemical facilities line the Houston Ship Channel, putting surrounding communities at risk from toxic leaks, explosions, and fires and making our already poor air quality worse.
17 counties in Texas, including Harris County (home to Houston), received D or F grades for ozone pollution from the American Lung Association. The overwhelming majority of Texas’s communities do not have air monitoring systems, so we cannot accurately assess the health risks local polluted air can pose to our families.
Texans are also already seeing the impact of climate change, made worse by our booming oil and gas industry. In 2021, a historic winter storm swept the South, and Texans faced massive electricity blackouts caused mainly by frozen natural gas pipelines and infrastructure that was ill-prepared for this extreme weather.
