Soot, also known as particle pollution or PM2.5, is one of the deadliest forms of air pollution. Sixty-three million people in the US live in places that receive a failing grade for short-term spikes in soot.
This pollution is linked to frightening health impacts, like premature death, preterm birth, low birth weight, and increased hospital visits for heart and respiratory illnesses, including pediatric asthma. Well over 100,000 premature deaths related to soot happen right here in the United States.
Right now, we are at a critical moment for ensuring cleaner air for our children and future generations—and we need your help to make sure strong soot protections get across the finish line.
For the past year, Moms Clean Air Force has been calling on EPA to set a more protective standard for soot of 8 micrograms per cubic meter for the annual standard and 25 micrograms per cubic meter for the 24-hour standard. This level of protection would save thousands of lives and prevent tens of thousands of asthma attacks every year.
Around the country, people struggle to breathe, lose beloved loved ones, and have babies born too small and too early because of this dangerous pollutant. This has to stop.
Join Moms in calling on the White House and EPA to finalize strong soot protections as soon as possible, because the health of our families and communities can’t wait.
