The news we were all expecting hit the headlines yesterday: we just lived through the hottest summer on record. And the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) says 2024 is on track to close as the hottest year ever recorded too.

Moms’ Director and Co-Founder, Dominique Browning, calls C3S’ report “sobering, but not surprising.” In a statement released on Friday, Dominique writes: “We’ve known for years—for decades—that burning fossil fuels unchecked would make our planet hotter. And we’ve known that more people would be at higher risk for heat-related illness as temperatures rise—especially children, who are still developing and can’t cool down as efficiently as adults can. Kids who lack access to air conditioning or health care are even more vulnerable. There’s a reason summer has earned the title of ‘danger season.’”
This milestone is hard to digest, we can make the best of it by using it as a catalyst for change. As Dominique points out: “Let’s be clear: heat can kill, but this is in no way a death sentence. It’s a call to action, not despair. It’s a stark warning and proof that we can’t wait any longer to use every tool we have to slow the climate crisis. The good news? We have a lot of them.”
While we double down on cutting climate pollution, we can’t ignore the climate impacts that are already underway. That’s why we worked with Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan on a resolution to keep kids safe during extreme weather. Tell your United States Representative to support this critical House resolution!
