Washington, DC – The Copernicus Climate Change Service reported today that 2024 was the hottest summer on record and is likely to close as the hottest year ever recorded. According to Moms Clean Air Force, the national non-profit committed to protecting children from air pollution, soot, toxic chemicals, and other negative climate change impacts, the report serves as a “stark warning” that humans must cut climate pollution now to avoid worst-case climate scenarios.
In a statement, Moms Clean Air Force’s Co-Founder and Director Dominique Browning said:
“This news is sobering, but not surprising. We’ve known for years—for decades—that burning fossil fuels unchecked would make our planet hotter. And we’ve known that more people would be at higher risk for heat related illness as temperatures rise—especially children, who are still developing and can’t cool down as efficiently as adults can. Kids who lack access to air conditioning or health care are even more vulnerable. There’s a reason summer has earned the title of ‘danger season.’
“Let’s be clear: heat can kill, but this is in no way a death sentence. It’s a call to action, not despair. It’s a stark warning and proof that we can’t wait any longer to use every tool we have to slow the climate crisis. The good news? We have a lot of them.”
