Gas pipelines are a significant source of methane, a potent climate pollutant more than 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
In fact, pipelines in the U.S. are estimated to leak as much as 2.7 million tons of methane into our atmosphere each year—equivalent to the climate pollution from 50 million cars—which can cause serious health impacts, such as asthma, low birth weight, and cancer.
This is unacceptable. And it’s a problem we can fix quickly. The Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has issued a proposal to find and fix more methane leaks—but it’s already way behind schedule.
Cutting methane pollution now is the best, most cost-effective way to slow the rate of climate disruption. We need PHMSA to act fast to eliminate pipeline leaks to protect our children’s future.
PHMSA’s proposed Advanced Leak Detection and Repair Rule includes protective standards that will
- Hold oil and gas operators accountable for their pollution,
- Improve the health and safety of communities near pipelines, and
- Cut climate pollution to protect our children’s future.
That’s a win-win-win. Join Moms in urging PHMSA to stop the leaks ASAP.
