It had been too long. Last week, Moms gathered in Washington, DC, for our first Play-In for Climate Action since 2019. The Play-In is a beloved Moms’ tradition—a way to include families in our advocacy for a climate-stable, pollution-free world.

The day began at the National Children’s Museum. Children, including mine, were happily engaged in all the museum’s offerings (they have a play structure cool enough that my nine-year-old wants to have her next birthday party there). This left caregivers free to listen to a series of truly inspirational speeches. Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-4) introduced a new resolution that acknowledges the unique mental and physical health impacts young people experience in a changing climate. Senator Jeff Merkley and Beyond Petrochemicals’ Heather McTeer Toney urged everyone in attendance to keep fighting for pollution protections from the plastics industry. I felt the weight of the importance of the day as I looked around, taking it all in.
If I had to single out a highlight of the morning, though, it was Moms Co-Founder and Director Dominique Browning’s reading of a letter Vice President Kamala Harris wrote for the crowd on this very special day of action. Enjoy the full text of the letter below:
