To: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Thank you for the opportunity to testify. My name is Laurie Anderson, and I am a Colorado Field Organizer with Moms Clean Air Force. I am from Broomfield, Colorado.
On behalf of Moms Clean Air Force, I urge you to protect the heavy-duty NOx rule. Strong transportation standards are crucial in protecting the health of our children and communities, and it is critical that we maintain these important safeguards.
As a mom of five, I know firsthand how pollution threatens children’s health—including my own children. Future generations will face even greater impacts unless we act now. One of the most basic and crucial things we can provide to families is clean air for children to breathe—it is the least we can do for them, yet communities like mine are struggling when it comes to clean air.
I live in the Denver Metro/North Front Range ozone nonattainment zone, which has been downgraded to “severe” nonattainment. Here we contend with NOx emissions from heavy vehicle traffic, along with VOC emissions from oil and gas development. The result is many high ozone days all summer long—days in which our air is unhealthy to breathe. These ozone action days are days when we, as parents, must keep our kids cooped up indoors, rather than letting them play and run outdoors. To bring our area into ozone attainment, we must reduce both pollution from upstream oil and gas operations, as well as tailpipe pollution.
At their peak, the current standards will help the nation’s on-road trucking fleet produce roughly 50% less smog-forming pollution compared to current levels. We must begin reducing NOx emissions now, because the sooner cleaner vehicles are on the road, the greater the benefits. The trucks addressed by this rule will remain in service for decades, shaping air quality for generations and playing a critical role in sustaining ozone compliance once achieved.
The future we only once imagined is becoming reality as automakers drive forward with cleaner technology—including innovations for heavy-duty vehicles. By maintaining strong standards, we can continue building momentum toward a world where tailpipe pollution is no longer a leading source of ozone and soot pollution.
Moms and dads across the country want to see a rapid transition to cleaner vehicles and cleaner air for our children and our communities. Everyone has the right to breathe clean air.
I urge EPA to protect the heavy-duty NOx rule. Please protect our health and our future by rejecting rollbacks of these important safeguards. Thank you for this opportunity to testify.
