Michigan Field Organizer Elizabeth Hauptman had never tasted pollution before, but that’s exactly what happened when she took a tour of the oil and gas wells sited next to a popular nature trail in Bay County, Michigan. An optical gas imaging (OGI) camera showed what Elizabeth had already guessed—large amounts of methane were leaking out of these wells along with a host of toxic compounds.
One month later, she brought a group of local leaders, advocates, and journalists back to the trail to learn about the dangerous pollution leaking from these wells and how strong federal methane protections help protect people’s health. Watch tour highlights on Mid Michigan Now.
