WASHINGTON, DC– The House and Senate are expected to vote this week on Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolutions that undermine the implementation of the Methane Emissions Reduction Program’s waste emissions charge, or methane polluters fee, which is a critical measure to cut methane waste and pollution from oil and gas operations that do not meet industry-set targets for emissions reduction.
In response, Moms Clean Air Force released the following statements:
“The methane polluters fee is a commonsense measure that protects the health of our families, cuts methane waste, and holds the largest oil and gas polluters accountable. As a mother living with oil and gas operations in my neighborhood, I have concerns about the impact of oil and gas pollution on the health of my children and neighbors,” says National Field Director Patrice Tomcik, who lives in Pennsylvania. “Polling shows that support for stronger standards on oil and gas operations is widespread across the country including in oil and gas states, such as Pennsylvania, where my family lives. Protecting the air our children breathe and combatting the global heating fueling extreme weather should be non-negotiable. I encourage my elected officials, and all elected officials, to consider our children’s health when they cast their votes this week.”
“Reducing methane pollution helps protect the health and safety of our children, communities, and is one of the best levers we have for combating global warming,” says National Field Manager Celerah Hewes, who lives in New Mexico. “Leading companies have already pledged to limit emissions below the industry set pollution threshold established by the Waste Emissions Charge and would avoid being subjected to the fee if those commitments are met. Repealing this methane polluters fee threatens critical pollution protections for our families and those living near oil and gas facilities. With the CRA votes in the House and Senate expected imminently, we urge our elected leaders to hold the largest polluters accountable and stand for the right of our children to breathe clean air and live in a safe, stable climate.”
