A group of Columbia, Maryland, residents are fighting a proposed “advanced recycling” plastics burning facility that would spew toxic air pollution less than a football field’s length away from their homes. In an op-ed published in the Baltimore Sun, Padma Swamy, who is a pediatrician, Moms member, and one of the Columbia residents leading the charge against this proposed facility, explains why it would bring such a “nightmare” to their community.
Tell Congress: Hold the Line on Progress to Cut Air and Climate Pollution
Project Manager Sam Schmitz (pictured) spoke at the group’s most recent public gathering, where she talked about the dangers of so-called “advanced recycling.” The Baltimore Sun reported on the event, where Sam underscored the deception at play. As Sam tells the paper, “advanced recycling” is “neither advanced nor recycling.” In fact, this term was created by the plastics industry as a way to rebrand decades-old plastics incineration technologies that create harmful pollution.
