Soot is a killer. Each year in the U.S., it cuts over 100,000 lives short. It causes heart and lung diseases, asthma attacks, cancer, and myriad other health harms.
EPA can help protect our health by setting a stronger soot standard. A stronger annual soot standard of 8 micrograms per cubic meter could avoid up to 16,000 premature deaths each year, while also preventing 46,000 pediatric emergency department visits for asthma.
Stronger soot protections would mean easier breathing and better quality of life for tens of thousands of children.
Stronger protections would also safeguard communities of color, which often bear the greatest pollution burden. People of color are 61% more likely than white people to live in a county where the air is unhealthy to breathe.
We need a stronger soot pollution standard now. The health of our families and communities is on the line.
