April may have been Earth Month for the rest of the world, but for us at EcoMadres, it’s Earth Month (and Earth Day!) every day! Our job is to help bring the best protections for our air and to fight 24/7 for communities impacted by pollution. As EcoMadres’ Isabel González Whitaker wrote for La Opinión in a special Earth Day op-ed, “Hispanic children are 40% more likely to die from asthma, compared to non-Hispanic whites due to environmental factors that affect vulnerable populations.” That’s but one reason we do this work. Check out what we’ve been up to and consider joining our fight for justice in every breath.
Join our growing community! EcoMadres fights for the health of Latino families impacted by air pollution and climate change.
ECOMADRES IN ACTION
Advancing clean energy and utility accountability in Nevada. Nevada field organizer Mercedes McKinley joined Fridays for Future Las Vegas’ climate rally. She told the crowd how investments from the Clean Energy Plan are benefiting the community and how we need to hold utility companies and policymakers accountable for prioritizing corporate profits over the health and well-being of Nevadans.
Fighting for clean air and environmental justice in Colorado. Colorado organizer Shaina Oliver joined partners at the Mile High Youth Corps Climate Connectors for a workshop about air quality. The program included a community conversation about the impact of air pollution on health and environmental justice, an overview of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Love My Air program, and DIY guidance for building your own air filter.
Combatting mercury pollution in Iowa. Iowa field organizer Karin Stein joined Iowa Interfaith Power & Light in rallying for a just transition away from coal plants. Karin gave remarks highlighting how Latino communities are disproportionately affected by air pollution, including mercury and other toxic pollution from Iowa coal plants.
Celebrating Madre Tierra in Arizona. Southwest field organizer Ylenia Aguilar joined Chispa Arizona and AZ AANHPI for Equity at their annual Earth Day Festival sharing fact sheets and resources about clean air and clean energy with hundreds of attendees.
A climate chat with Congresswoman Nanette Díaz Barragán. Congresswoman Barragán shares what motivates her fight for environmental justice and public health, how climate investments from the Inflation Reduction Act are showing up in local communities, and what Justice in Every Breath means to her in this EcoCharla with EcoMadres.
