Methane is all over the place lately: in the news, and unfortunately, in the air. It’s an extremely potent climate pollutant, which is why we were so excited about the successful launch of MethaneSAT last week to help us identify where methane is lurking undetected.
But knowing is only half the battle. We also need to clean up leaky pipes and wells that are the source of so much of this polluting methane. Leaky pipes contribute as much climate pollution as 50 million cars.
The good news is that the Department of Transportation has a proposal in the works to find and repair leaks from pipelines. We need your voice to help get this proposal over the finish line.
In my home in Colorado, there are many leaky pipelines that run right past schools and homes. This has caused a lot of angst and worry for families living nearby. We are lucky that many of these leaks have been found and that we have an enhanced air quality monitoring program to help find more leaks. Not every community is so lucky.
The Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s proposal will bring federal resources to bear to ensure the air we breathe is clean, and the climate is protected.
Add your voice today to urge swift action on leaky pipes and methane.
