Fossil fuel power plants are responsible for about a quarter of the climate pollution generated in the U.S. Reducing this pollution is key to addressing our escalating climate crisis.
Moms has been testifying at EPA hearings for nearly 10 years about the need for protections from climate-heating power plant pollution. We haven’t stopped fighting since. Now, these protections are close to the finish line. There is no time to waste.
Nearly all of us have felt the health impacts of climate change firsthand in recent years: we’ve sweltered during hotter summers, watched our children cough on days blanketed with wildfire smoke, and anxiously checked our phones for extreme weather alerts. We already know why we need to limit climate pollution, and fast.
The current power plant rule is primarily focused on climate, but it will also result in the reduction of other forms of health-harming air pollution, including particle pollution (also known as soot) and smog-forming nitrogen oxide. The proposed rule will cover pollution from existing and new coal-fired power plants; it also covers new natural gas-fired power plants.
