ECOMADRES IN ACTION

Celebrating stronger federal soot standards. EcoNiña Leena, a fifth grader from Virginia Beach, introduced EPA Administrator Michael Regan at the signing of new standards for fine particle pollution, also known as PM2.5 or soot. EcoMadres applaud these new protections, which will better safeguard the millions of Latinos living in communities with poor air quality.
Prioritizing climate advocacy for young children’s health. Moms Clean Air Force hosted its inaugural Climate Disruption, Air Pollution, and Young Peoples’ Health convening on February 8. EcoMadres Director Isabel González Whitaker introduced Chelsea Clinton, Vice Chair of the Clinton Foundation, and Grace Bastidas, Editor-in-Chief at Parents, for a conversation about how we can empower parents to protect kids in a changing climate and work toward a healthier, more sustainable planet.

Standing up for clean energy alternatives. Nevada field organizer Mercedes McKinley joined customers outside Southwest Gas offices to share their frustrations with rising rates. Customers are paying double and even triple the normal rates because of extreme weather-related demands on the grid. We are seeking economical clean energy alternatives, such as more solar power, to reduce reliance on methane gas, which is harmful to human health.
Fostering belonging at the Naturally Latinos Conference. Ecomadres’ Liz Hurtado joined Nature Forward’s event for an opportunity to hear from environmental justice experts and advocates. Together, we engaged in conversation about the Latino community’s concerns and needs and pushed for solutions to help bridge the gap between Latinos and policymaking.
Exploring social justice through environmental advocacy. Ecomadres’ Danielle Berkowitz-Sklar joined the Environmental Social Justice podcast to speak about clean air, environmental and social justice, and EcoMadres’ mission to help bring Latino communities to spaces where decisions are being made to protect little lungs. Watch the replay.
Voyage to Justice: Equity and Climate Justice Forum. EcoMadres’ Luz Drada and Moms’ Stephanie Reese and Almeta Cooper participated in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forum about the disproportionate climate impacts borne by people of color and low-income communities. Forum participants discussed how to advance climate and environmental justice.
Parenting in the Climate Crisis. EcoMadres’ Liz Hurtado joined this interactive event to discuss how parents in the Latino community and beyond can help their children navigate the emotional and physical impacts of the climate crisis. Watch the replay.
