I have a banner hanging above my desk with a quote from the Dalai Lama. It says: “Never give up, no matter what is going on.” He goes on to talk about developing the heart, developing compassion.
I have been staring at that banner as I absorb the news of a President-elect Trump.
We — parents who believe in our right to clean air and clean water and a stable climate — have become the checks and balances on a president who threatens to trample those, and many other, rights.
Trump has said that climate change is a hoax. He intends to dismantle and defund agencies that protect us from pollution, and to let corporate polluters have free rein. He intends to take the U.S. out of global efforts to curb climate pollution.
He has hired, as an advisor, a man who is paid by corporate polluters to lie about global warming, to deny the science that proves it.
I can promise you: We will resist any and all attempts to lie to us. We will resist any attempts to cripple the Clean Air Act. It is up to us to ensure that our government protects us. We must hold our leaders accountable. We will have to do this together.
We have enormous work ahead of us. It is time to be thoughtful, steady, and calm. We have a government that can weather change. We are in for extreme weather.
We will always remain fierce, creative, and focused when it comes to protecting our children’s health and wellbeing.
Our climate is not waiting for us to change. But our children are. (Tweet this) Our work is more urgent than ever.
