This week, I joined Moms to testify before EPA in support of Advanced Clean Cars rules adopted by California and other states, including my home state of Virginia.
These states have already made the decision to set strong tailpipe pollution protections. But EPA must approve these rules in order for states to enforce them—and safeguard our climate and children’s health.
My family is among the millions of people in the U.S. who live near a major roadway or transportation facility. Our house is less than two minutes from I-95.
Every day, my family, friends, neighbors, and I are exposed to a lot of tailpipe exhaust. We are constantly breathing in harmful pollutants.
As a mother, I worry about my sons’ exposure to pollution as they are playing outside or heading to school. This pollution has been linked to lung damage and other respiratory problems—and it is especially harmful to children, whose bodies are still developing.
My seven-year-old son often tells me that he has trouble breathing. To say this has me worried is an understatement. I can clearly see the connection between cleaner vehicles, cleaner air, and a healthier environment for my children to live and play in.
For decades, states have been allowed to adopt clean car protections that are stronger than federal protections to address their air quality issues and safeguard children’s health. EPA must allow states to continue their efforts against tailpipe pollution.
Join Moms in urging EPA to grant states the authority to implement strong clean car safeguards. There is no time to waste in addressing this critical issue for our children’s and our communities’ health.
