Clean Air, Climate, Health Equity and Inequity: Ask the Experts About Soot and Our Health

Video

On March 16, 2023, Moms Clean Air Force invited a panel of experts to answer questions about what we can do to protect our health from soot pollution and how can we hold EPA and our local elected officials accountable. EPA regulates how much of soot pollution we can be exposed to annually or daily. The agency currently has proposed to update its 2012 standards, but many believe this proposal doesn’t go far enough.

Speakers:

  • Dr. Mozhgon Rajee, Associate Professor of Public Health at Oakland University, with a PhD and MPH in Environmental Health Sciences and an MS in Environmental Science
  • Ms. Kailey Kanaziz, a practicing registered nurse in northern Michigan and active with Michigan Clinicians for Climate Action and the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments
  • Rev. Morgan Foreman, a community leader and advocate for the environment and communities of color, and Constituent Services Director for State Rep. Felicia Brabec in the Michigan House of Representatives.

The discussion was moderated by Almeta E. Cooper, Moms Clean Air Force’s National Manager for Health Equity.

We heard questions from two college students, Lauren Shaffner and Marcell Simmons, who were joined by Professor Deirdre Courtney Nieves, Professor of Environment and Sustainability and Anthropological Studies, Western Michigan University and Director of Climate Solutions at Western Michigan Environmental Action Council, Kalamazoo, Michigan.
