Press Statement January 30, 2025

Contact: DKC News, MomsCleanAirForce@dkcnews.com

On Thursday, January 30th, Governor Josh Shapiro unveiled his six-part Lightning Energy Plan to set a vision for the next generation of Pennsylvania’s energy future. The proposed policies are intended to diversify Pennsylvania’s energy mix, create better grid reliability, and cap power sector pollution. These initiatives are critical to clean energy progress in Pennsylvania, which currently ranks at 48th place for clean renewable energy growth in the United States.

In response to Governor Shapiro’s announcement, Moms Clean Air Force’s Pennsylvania field organizers released the following statements:

“Moms Clean Air Force appreciates the Governor’s work to create broad coalitions focused on Pennsylvania energy and environmental solutions and we hope to see a commitment to cleaner, renewable energy and air pollution reduction as his energy policy is put into action,” says Pennsylvania Field Organizer Vanessa Lynch. “Parents across the Commonwealth know ambitious climate action is the solution our children and their future deserve. The financial, physical, and emotional toll of air pollution on our children must be addressed now with equitable energy solutions that protect their health. Frontline communities, like mine, know Pennsylvania’s energy and environmental plans must prioritize clean air and a livable future for our children. The time for courageous and decisive action is now.”

“Protecting families from astronomically increasing energy costs is a welcome relief for families across the Commonwealth and we thank the Governor for his work with PJM and capping high energy costs so that families have a little more breathing room,” says Pennsylvania Field Organizer Brooke Petry. “As we move forward, a clean, reliable, and diversified power generation sector that improves people’s lives is the only path to keeping Pennsylvania’s energy bills low. As he charts a new course for Pennsylvanians with his Lightning Energy Plan, Governor Shapiro has the opportunity to shine as an example of conscientious leadership and to demonstrate an understanding of that which we must not compromise–the health of our children. Access to clean air is a right enshrined in the Pennsylvania constitution, and has no place on the bargaining table.”

Moms Clean Air Force looks forward to reviewing more details of the plan and working with the Governor and state leaders to ensure Pennsylvania’s energy transition embraces bold clean energy solutions focused on the quality of life our children inherit.
