Washington, DC – This morning, the United States Supreme Court announced a ruling that abruptly blocked the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) “Good Neighbor” rule, which protects millions of people in downwind states from harmful smog that blows across their borders from polluters in upwind states. Without this vitally important safeguard, more families are at risk of exposure to air pollution that can lead to negative health impacts such as breathing problems, reduced lung function in children, and asthma attacks.
In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, Moms Clean Air Force’s Director and Co-Founder Dominique Browning released the following statement:
“Wind blows pollution across the country and doesn’t stop at state lines, which is exactly why we need the EPA’s “good neighbor” rule. The ruling sets the clock back for all downwind neighbors; right now the protections are working. All polluters have to do—during these hot summer months that make air pollution even more deadly, is turn on pollution controls. The announcement from the Supreme Court suspends these protections, and gives polluters the right to pollute as much as they want. This Supreme Court is out of control in its fight to dismantle the responsibilities of EPA and other agencies that are doing the job of protecting people from the industrial behemoths that are making billions of dollars as we spend billions on hospital visits—and Moms are outraged.”
