Washington, DC – Moms Clean Air Force’s Montana field organizer Michelle Uberuaga traveled to Helena, Montana today to support the 16 young people who sued their government last year in Held v. State of Montana—and won. Michelle stood in solidarity with the plaintiffs when it went to court in 2023 and these youth argued that their home state violated their constitutional right to a “clean and healthful environment.” The judge ruled in their favor, but the state appealed the decision, which is why this case is back in the Montana Supreme Court today for oral arguments.
In response, Michelle Uberuaga released the following statement:
“I was proud to stand in solidarity with the youth plaintiffs in Held v. State of Montana when their case went to trial last year, and I’m proud to stand with them once again as they defend their right to a clean and healthful environment, which is guaranteed by our state’s constitution. Our children’s future depends on what we do today, and it is inspiring to see these young people are working to protect our rights now and for future generations. Here in Montana, we have seen floods, wildfires, drought, fish dying in our rivers, to name a few – these climate impacts are taking a toll on everyone and changing our way of life. These youth know that we can’t afford to put off climate action any longer.”
