Washington, DC—As lawmakers brace for a revamped version of permitting reform legislation to overhaul the nation’s permitting laws around energy projects, Moms Clean Air Force Senior Legislative Manager Melody Reis issued the following statement:
“Moms Clean Air Force recognizes that the transition to a clean energy future will require changes to the current permitting process. However, we are deeply concerned by reports that Congress is considering adding permitting reform provisions to must-pass legislation. Transforming the nation’s permitting process is a significant undertaking that should not be treated lightly.
“Moms Clean Air Force supports the development of much-needed clean energy infrastructure, but engagement with frontline and environmental justice communities, who have for so long borne the costs of economic growth, is essential. Congress should have the opportunity to consider input from experts, scientists, and members of the communities that stand to be most affected by these changes. Legislation should go through regular order with an opportunity for robust floor debate, not be attached to an unrelated bill that forces lawmakers to choose between protecting environmental justice communities and supporting the continuous operation of government.”
