Broomfield, CO—The following statement was issued on Friday via Twitter by Laurie Anderson, Moms Clean Air Force Colorado state coordinator, as extreme fire conditions threatened her home state of Colorado—as well as New Mexico, Arizona, and Nebraska:
“My home in Broomfield is under a Red Flag Warning due to threat from potential out-of-control fires. Much of eastern Colorado is at extreme risk right now, due to hot, dry, and windy conditions, made worse by climate change.
“Our family’s bags are packed so we can evacuate if needed. And still, oil and gas operators in our neighborhood are moving forward with business as usual, continuing to drill and frack near our homes.
“If there’s a well pad fire—as has been common recently in my area—the high winds would launch the flames across the tall, bone-dry grasses and onto our open spaces, threatening our homes.
“The time for action on the climate crisis is now. This Earth Day, under threat of potentially disastrous climate-fueled wildfires, I implore our lawmakers in Washington to move forward with ambitious climate legislation that puts us on a path to climate safety.”
