WHAT: Duke University’s Heat Policy Innovation Hub Director, Ashley Ward, will share a practical framework for developing a heat action plan in her August 21st webinar with Moms Clean Air Force. Drawing from experience from the United Nations to the state and local level, Dr. Ward will illustrate how to build a plan that can be tailored to your organization, school, community group, or workplace. The session will cover how to identify who is most at risk, recognize the conditions that trigger concern, respond effectively during periods of extreme heat, and prepare in advance for the next heatwave.
Dr. Ward will also examine how local, state, and federal policy decisions shape communities’ ability to act—and how individuals can effectively advocate for stronger protections.
With children heading back to classrooms and sports fields while temperatures remain high, this is the ideal moment to learn how to keep kids safe today and to begin building the heat action plans we’ll need for next summer.
Ashley Ward, PhD, is the Director of the Heat Policy Innovation Hub at Duke University’s Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability. Her work centers on protecting human health and enhancing community resilience in the face of climate threats, especially extreme heat. Ashley brings together scientists, policymakers, and local leaders to develop effective, community-informed solutions that reduce the risks of heat exposure.
