Press Statement August 20, 2024

WHAT: Moms Clean Air Force and the Climate Action Campaign will host a virtual town hall about the devastating impacts of extreme heat on Arizona families. The event will feature a range of speakers, including Congressman Greg Stanton, Moms Arizona Field Organizer Hazel Chandler, Dr. Debra Hendrickson, and Moms volunteer Amy Dishion, whose husband died two years ago as a result of extreme heat exposure.

“Heat just kills people. His death destroyed my life,” said Amy Dishion, whose husband died of heat stroke when their daughter was three months old.  “He has missed her life.”

“Every year in Arizona we are breaking previous year records on extreme heat, and it is putting our children and families at risk,” says Moms Clean Air Force Arizona Field Organizer Hazel Chandler, who will moderate the Town Hall. “The clock is ticking on mitigating the worst impacts of climate change that will provide a livable future for our children and families.”

“In Arizona, we know all too well that extreme heat can be deadly,” says Representative Greg Stanton. “I’m working in Congress to make sure local communities in Arizona have the resources they need to mitigate the effects of extreme heat and protect public health, but there’s still a lot more to do to address the effects of a changing climate.”

“Our children are planning their lives in circumstances no prior generation has seen,” says Dr. Debra Hendrickson, author of The Air They Breathe: A Pediatrician on the Frontlines of Climate Change “Childhood has always been a risky period of life; throughout history, babies and children have met peril, from polio to famine, from cyclones to war. Yet they have never had to face, in quite this way, the potential loss of the future itself.”

WHO:

  • Hazel Chandler, Arizona Field Organizer, Moms Clean Air Force (moderator)
  • Congressman Greg Stanton, Arizona’s 4th District
  • Dr. Debra Hendrickson, Pediatrician and Author
  • Amy Dishion, Moms Clean Air Force Volunteer
  • Aarna Dharia, Youth Climate Advocate
  • Ashton Dolce, Region 9 FEMA Youth Preparedness Council
