Juan Declet-Barreto, Ph. D

Juan Declet-Barreto is Senior Social Scientist for Climate Vulnerability for the Climate & Energy Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists. At UCS, he researches, maps, analyzes, communicates, and finds solutions to the inequitable human health and livelihood impacts of environmental hazards, particularly those exacerbated by climate change.

An interdisciplinary environmental and social scientist, Dr. Declet-Barreto earned a Ph.D. in environmental social sciences, M.A. and B.S. degrees in geography, and an associate’s degree in geographic information systems, from Arizona State University.

Teresa Muñoz, MD

Dr. Teresa Muñoz is a physician in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Kaiser Richmond Medical Center in Richmond, CA.

She was born and raised in Mexico City and attended medical school at University of California, San Diego. Dr. Muñoz completed her internship and residency at UCSF, Fresno. She also speaks Spanish fluently.

She went into the medical profession because she enjoys understanding the pathophysiology of disease. Her goal is the well being of all her patients, and she strives to treat everyone equally and with respect.

Karin Stein

Karin Stein is the Iowa state organizer for Moms Clean Air Force. Before moving to Kellogg, Iowa, in 1980, Karin, a Colombian citizen, lived in Costa Rica. The granddaughter of German immigrants, she grew up on a remote, off-the-grid cattle and rice farm in the eastern plains of Colombia, where she was homeschooled. She traces her understanding of the earth as an interconnected organism to her first 11 years in the wilderness, complemented later by her degrees in biology and horticulture. She and her siblings direct a watershed conservation foundation in Costa Rica.

Karin has been a nationally and internationally touring musician for 21 years, and she recently started an initiative to reduce the environmental impact of the performing arts. She has three grown daughters who continuously inspire her and her husband to protect the environment and fight climate change any way they can.

Karin’s work has been highlighted by the Des Moines Register, The Gazette, Muscatine Journal, El Trueque Magazine, among others, and has included op-eds about environmental justice to features about her political advocacy.
