Moms Clean Air Force New Mexico will join our partner organizations at Civic Plaza in Albuquerque on Wednesday to call on the City Council to reinstate its ban on plastic bags, the Clean and Green Retail Ordinance. The ordinance was rescinded because of sanitation concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic. But health experts worldwide agree that single-use plastic is not safer, and in fact, the coronavirus can live on plastic surfaces for 3 to 7 days.
Plastic is polluting our oceans, our forests, our beaches, and even Arctic ice. It is made of fossil fuels, primarily oil and natural gas, and its manufacture contaminates our air, water, soil, and health and contributes to climate change. Banning plastic bags is essential for the health and wellness of our city.
