Despite a government shutdown, EPA Administrator Zeldin is pushing forward with his POLLUTION SPREE. The latest blood-boiling proposal from EPA is to weaken safety reviews for chemicals as required under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) in order to “increase efficiency.” Because when it comes to toxic chemicals and our bodies, Zeldin’s EPA doesn’t care. It just wants to keep the chemical industry happy.🙄
Read between the lines here: Weakening TSCA, our nation’s bedrock law to protect people from toxic chemicals, would be a giant gift to the chemical industry. Messing with TSCA is terrifying and dangerous, and puts our children and communities at risk.
Tell EPA: Hands Off Chemical Safety Reviews
Originally passed in 1976, TSCA got a sorely overdue update in 2016—and Moms Clean Air Force fought hard for this overhaul, which was a huge win for public health. One key reform was a requirement that the most dangerous chemicals already in use in the marketplace be reviewed to determine whether they pose an unreasonable threat to human health. Can you believe this had never been done before?
We also fought for 2024 updates to TSCA’s chemical risk evaluation process that required EPA to consider all uses of a chemical when evaluating its level of risk. This included uses in household products, children’s toys, and industry, plus potential for air pollution, water contamination, and more—to figure out the total risk to people and the environment. Again, can you believe that had never been done before? Scary!
It’s infuriating to see our toxic chemical laws under attack. The Trump EPA wants to pick and choose which chemical exposures it feels like evaluating. They could ignore whatever they want to, including how people are being exposed to chemicals at home, at work, and in their communities at the same time.
Weak chemical protection is not good enough for our families and communities. We cannot stand for decreased chemical data, chemicals declared “safe” without evidence, and sped-up chemical review processes that come at the expense of health and safety.
Consumer and commercial products alike should not be filled with unregulated and unrestricted toxic chemicals. We know more than ever how dangerous these chemicals are to health, especially for babies and children.
Join Moms in telling EPA not to weaken toxic chemical protections. We must all raise our voices to stop Zeldin’s POLLUTION SPREE from causing further harm.
