This week, I joined New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham to celebrate a major win: Methane pollution data collected by satellite shows oil and gas operators on the New Mexico side of the Permian Basin are releasing methane at half the rate of operators next door in Texas.
It’s no coincidence that New Mexico is faring better on methane pollution than neighboring Texas. New Mexico finalized strong state methane rules for oil and gas operators in 2022, and they are working. Join Moms in telling EPA that if we can cut methane in New Mexico, we can cut methane across the country.
Tell EPA: Delaying Methane Pollution Protections Is Shameful
Moms Clean Air Force fought hard for years for New Mexico’s oil and gas methane pollution protections, giving testimony, writing comments and op-eds, meeting with decision makers. We know how vital these protections are for children’s health. They are common sense, science-based, and now proven to work.
We also fought hard for EPA’s federal methane rule, finalized in 2024, giving 100 testimonies before EPA and submitting more than 50,000 comments in favor of the strongest possible protections. We are furious that this rule has been stalled by EPA Administrator Zeldin as part of his POLLUTION SPREE. He’s telling oil and gas operators they don’t have to comply with new protections for 18 more months. That’s 18 extra months of potent methane emissions with significantly more climate-heating power than carbon dioxide.
We cannot delay in protecting public health from oil and gas methane pollution. Not to mention, cutting methane is one of the best levers we have to quickly and significantly reduce climate pollution across the U.S. and slow the rate of global warming.
Join Moms today in telling EPA this is unacceptable! Methane rules work, and we should implement the ones we have. Any delay will destabilize progress on climate and put families’ health at risk. Our children deserve a healthy future.
