To: EPA
My name is Kiya Stanford, and I am the Georgia State Coordinator for Moms Clean Air Force, a national organization of over 1.6 million moms, dads, and caregivers united to protect the next generation from air pollution and the impending dangers of the climate crisis. Moms Clean Air Force strongly opposes the Trump/Zeldin EPA’s proposal to erase the Clean Air Act’s responsibility to limit climate pollution from the power sector. Climate pollution protections are vital to safeguarding our children’s health and future.
As you all know, climate change poses a threat to the health and well-being of everyone. Impacts of climate change include more severe heat, as we saw this year with the hottest summer on record, supercharged weather events, and increased air pollution to name a few examples.
Fossil fueled power plants are responsible for almost 25% of the climate pollution generated in the U.S. and directly contribute to a hotter climate. The greenhouse gases emitted from the fossil fuel industry are a large factor in global warming and continue to pose a tremendous threat to humans, wildlife, waterways, and consequently our quality of life.
Certain vulnerable populations such as infants and toddlers, pregnant women, the elderly, people of color, low-income communities, and people with disabilities are more likely to be impacted by the effects of climate change. Health impacts from climate change can range from increased respiratory illnesses, injuries and death from extreme weather events, adverse birth outcomes and so many more!
It is our responsibility, and yours, to make sure we do all we can to protect our families, neighbors, and communities from the health threats associated with climate change. This additional gutting to the previously repealed Carbon Rule is in direct opposition to that responsibility.
This is not my, or many others’, first time before EPA to urge this agency to uphold its regulatory commitment to ensure that protecting the health of American families is its priority. With this reckless, dangerous proposal, EPA is attempting to prevent the agency from ever regulating climate pollution from the power sector, prioritizing corporate interest above public benefit, by rescinding EPA’s greenhouse gas findings for power plants. This action, if finalized, would conclude that Section 111 of the Clean Air Act does not authorize EPA to regulate climate pollution, and strip one of the most consequential regulatory statutes of the agency ineffective after half a century.
I urge you, again, to consider the science, the irrefutable damage this would do to our nation and generations of Americans to come, and the futures of those we know and love. Thank you for your time.
