Last fall, at the EcoMadres Summit, a mom of five told her story of not being able to pay her power bill. When she couldn’t pay, her power was shut off. The food in her fridge started to rot, and her son couldn’t use the nebulizer he needs to manage his asthma.
“I live in constant fear that one day I won’t be able to afford the bill again, and my son’s health will be at risk,” she said from the stage. Families cannot live this way—and yet so many do, as energy bills are skyrocketing across the country.

Our energy bills are going up thanks to President Trump and Congress. The Trump administration has been trying since Day 1 to revive a dying fossil fuel industry, stripping power plant pollution protections, spending millions to prop up outdated coal plants, and reopening ancient generating stations already set for closure.
These policies cost A LOT of money—and those costs are being pushed along to us, the consumers. We didn’t ask for these changes. Companies are profiting, and we’re paying. One gas power plant Trump forced open in Pennsylvania is expected to add $70 million annually to local families’ electricity bills.
Trump and Congress have at the same time gutted affordable clean energy projects widely expected to bring electricity costs down. Solar and wind energy costs have plummeted in recent years. They are not only healthier for our lungs and our planet, they are also cheaper than coal and gas. A win-win-win!
It’s time for Congress to stand up for families. The anti-clean energy gambit isn’t working. We need to reinvest in affordable renewable energy sources that will protect our health and our wallets.
