About: EPA Docket No. EPA-HQ-OAR-2025-0186-0001, Reconsideration of the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program
To: Environmental Protection Agency
My name is Kiya Stanford, and I am the Georgia State Coordinator for Moms Clean Air Force, a national organization of over 1.6 million moms, dads, and caregivers united to protect children from air pollution and our changing climate. I am speaking to you today to strongly oppose EPA’s proposed repeal of the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program. Collecting accurate climate pollution data is vital for addressing the harmful impacts of global warming that our families and communities are already feeling every day. Getting rid of this data collection will only make climate change more expensive, more dangerous, and more difficult to deal with.
We know that climate change is making heat waves longer and more severe, and we know that climate change is amplifying extreme weather events of all kinds and making air pollution worse. With us only being one-year removed from Hurricane Helene almost to the day, the thought of removing data collection avenues that could help scientists, policy makers and local, state, and federal government agencies adequately predict and prepare for a similar threat is FRIGHTENING. The health impacts of climate change are proven to disproportionately harm vulnerable populations like children, the elderly, lower-income populations and communities of color. Not collecting the data won’t make the effects associated with them go away but will exacerbate their effects on these communities. As a black woman, with aging parents, and a desire to grow a family, my intersectionality will undoubtedly cause me to feel the effects of this repeal in my lifetime. Climate scientists have been clear that we need to prioritize cutting climate pollution NOW for the safety of future generations, GHGRP is critical to making that happen. Removing it now would be like removing the smoke detector from a burning building because you are tired of the noise. The fire won’t stop just because the alarm is gone.
The GHGRP has been effective for the last 15 years. Research suggests that power plants subject to the GHGRP reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 7%, and that the program helps to identify high-emitting facilities and reduce corporate greenwashing behavior. Let’s continue to hold polluters accountable and provide our communities with data for their health and safety. Again, I oppose the rollbacks of the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program.
Thank you.
