On October 15th thousands of writers from around the globe will come together for Blog Action Day to talk about one topic – The Power of We. The Power of We is a celebration of people working together to make a positive difference in the world, in their own communities or helping people they have never met.
Examples of the Power of We are endless, each group created with unique qualities. However, as different as they all are there’s one common thread: each movement, action or inspiration generally began with one or a few voices and a vision that then grew into a force of many. The movie Field of Dreams says it best: “If you build it, he will come.”
Moms Clean Air Force
Moms Clean Air Force, an organization that’s near and dear to my heart, is the epitome of The Power of We. It started off as a vision and a voice of a few and has grown into a national movement of moms, dads, grandmothers, grandfathers and more who have joined forces to fight for our right to clean air. Moms Clean Air Force has become a collective voice of over 100,000 members filled with passion and power working tirelessly to protect our children. In addition to its growing membership it has an active Facebook page of almost 20,000 fans and close to 4,000 Twitter followers. It has become a force to be reckoned with and exemplifies the true meaning of The Power of We.
Being the mother of three young boys, ages 8, 10 and 12, I know that most parents will do everything and anything within their power to keep their children safe and sound. Over the years two of my three children have suffered from life-threatening food allergies and my middle son has landed himself in the hospital several times for severe breathing problems related to asthma. Watching him wheeze and struggle for each breath is a vision that’s hard to shake. Knowing what the outcome could be if his breathing is not regulated is unimaginable. Knowing that so many others are afflicted with similar health issues is mind boggling.
I joined Moms Clean Air Force to make a difference. Together we form a community of people willing to go to bat for our children’s right to clean air. I know I’m not alone in believing we need regulations in place that will assure that our children have clean air right now, and in the future. Moms Clean Air Force stands behind “Sometimes, being a good mom means being an active citizen.”
Together all of us at Moms Clean Air Force have created a clear message: We need to listen to moms and dads. We share the air—and we want it clean!
