On November 15, 2022, Shell announced its ethane cracker facility in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, was officially operational. On February 23, 2023, Shell hit its 100th day of operations, and it’s been far from a smooth start.
This plant is the largest plastics production facility in the Northeast US and Shell’s largest petrochemical facility outside the Gulf Coast. In Shell’s first two months of operations, it received 2 notices of violation from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and submitted 5 malfunction reports. The plant also came online as the global petrochemical market is in a severe bust cycle, raising questions about the plant’s profitability.
