Thank you for the opportunity to testify. My name is Jayne Black, and I am a Wisconsin Field Consultant for Moms Clean Air Force. I am from De Pere, Wisconsin. I strongly oppose EPA’s proposal to repeal the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program.”
- We need accurate data about climate pollution—the kind of data collected by the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program—to inform policies that help minimize greenhouse gas emissions and keep people safer from the impacts of climate change. These impacts hit very close to home for my family. I am here today not only representing the over 17,000 members in Wisconsin but as a mother of a daughter who has multiple sclerosis and a son who has asthma. Their lives are greatly impacted by air pollution and climate change.
- My daughter’s life has gotten very challenging and small since her MS diagnosis. The fatigue, flares, and relapses she deals with are exacerbated by air pollution and extreme heat—and we know that climate change makes both heat and air pollution worse.
- There are 1 million people in our country with multiple sclerosis—and like everyone who struggles with chronic disease, these people deserve policies that can help address the problem of global warming and the numerous health impacts it causes. There are also millions of people in our country with asthma, including my son and 72,000 children in Wisconsin. The air pollution and heat exacerbated by climate change also make it harder for people with asthma to breathe.
- Accurate, timely data about climate pollution can be a lifesaving call to action, sounding an alarm when high-emitting facilities need to be held accountable for their pollution. Just as a “code blue” hospital alarm alerts medical staff that a patient is in urgent need of medical attention, so too can data about climate pollution tell policymakers where their attention is needed.
- The GHGRP is a vital source of public information that we need to protect people from climate change and all the damage it creates, from worsening floods, fires, and heat waves to rising insurance costs. Our families and communities are feeling the health and economic impacts of climate change every day. The GHGRP supports data-driven decisions for reducing emissions and developing climate policies. It helps businesses identify ways to cut pollution and save money. Doctors and the broader healthcare industry are increasingly using greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions programs to improve human health, reduce costs, and build more resilient healthcare systems.
- EPA’s proposal is an extreme, dangerous step to obscure pollution data from the public and undermine climate action, attempting to sweep our nation’s responsibility for climate pollution under the rug.
“Once again, I strongly oppose EPA’s efforts to roll back the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program.” Do NOT take away our “CODE BLUE” our children’s very lives depend on it.
