To: Environmental Protection Agency
My name is Ida Sami, and I am a field coordinator of Moms Clean Air Force in Arizona. I have a PhD in environmental science, and I am outraged by the threat of air pollution from power plants to our public health and environment. That’s why I am here today to urge you to defend the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS), which protect us from mercury and other dangerous pollutants emitted by coal- and oil-fired electric utility steam generating units.
Mercury is a deadly poison that can damage the brains and nervous systems of unborn babies and young children. EPA has found that power plants are one of the largest sources of mercury in the US, spewing nearly half of all mercury emissions. Exposure to mercury can cause irreversible harm, such as learning disabilities, developmental delays, and behavioral problems. It can also affect the hearts, immune systems, and reproductive organs of adults.
MATS is a vital health protection that reduces hazardous air pollutant emissions from power plants, such as mercury, arsenic, lead, nickel, and acid gasses. These pollutants can cause serious health problems, such as cancer, neurological damage, respiratory illnesses, and cardiovascular diseases. They can also harm the environment by contaminating water, soil, and wildlife.
The proposed rule is consistent with the Clean Air Act and EPA’s obligation to review hazardous air pollution standards for control technology improvements every eight years after the implementation of Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) standards.
As a scientist and a concerned citizen, I ask you to uphold MATS and ensure that we can breathe clean air free from mercury and other toxics. MATS is aligned with the mission of Moms Clean Air Force, which is to fight for justice in every breath and to recognize the importance of equitable solutions in addressing air pollution and climate change. We cannot let polluters endanger our health and our environment.
Thank you.
