My name is Giovanna Rossi, and I am a mom and a Field Organizer for Moms Clean Air Force New Mexico Chapter, living in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
As a mom raising my children here in New Mexico, I am deeply alarmed by the EPA’s proposal to rescind the Endangerment Finding and limits on greenhouse gas pollution from vehicle tailpipes. I urge you to uphold and defend the Endangerment Finding and the vital protections it supports, including our Clean Cars and Trucks standards.
Here in New Mexico, we are already feeling the devastating effects of climate change: hotter summers, more extreme droughts, intense wildfires, dangerous floods. We recently lived through another record-breaking heatwave, and I worry every day about the air my kids breathe. When temperatures rise, air pollution gets much worse. My son plays soccer, and some days practice is cancelled due to extreme heat or unhealthy air, which means he has to stay indoors.
We know without a doubt that unchecked climate pollution leads to real and worsening health impacts. These impacts also hit the pocketbooks of families with additional healthcare costs and unpaid days off work to care for sick kids. From heat exhaustion and asthma attacks to pregnancy complications and the mental trauma of living through extreme weather events, the cost of climate pollution is too high for inaction.
Children, especially, are uniquely vulnerable. Their bodies and brains are still developing, and they are less able to adapt to extreme heat, polluted air, and the many cascading harms of a rapidly warming planet. As a mother, I want a future where my children’s health is prioritized. Every child deserves the chance to grow up healthy, safe, and strong—and the EPA has a duty to help ensure that.
Rescinding the Endangerment Finding would not only strip away critical protections, but it would also deepen existing inequalities. Here in New Mexico, frontline communities—often low-income families and communities of color—already bear the brunt of climate disasters. Weakening the EPA’s ability to curb climate pollution from sources like tailpipes would leave them even more vulnerable. Meanwhile the fossil fuel industry is making record profits; greenhouse gas regulations have not hurt their bottom lines. The Endangerment Finding is legally sound, scientifically irrefutable, and morally necessary. Courts have upheld it time and again. Overturning or undermining it now would be reckless, unjust, and would betray the EPA’s core mission: to protect human health and the environment.
Our children depend on us. I am calling on you, as a mother, a community member, and a citizen, to do your job: Defend the Endangerment Finding and climate pollution limits for motor vehicle tailpipes. Protect our kids. Protect our future.
