My name is Ali Simpson, and I live in Bedford, New York, in Westchester County. I serve as the Senior Manager for Field Campaigns for Moms Clean Air Force, and I’m testifying today to implore EPA NOT to revoke the Endangerment Finding or EPA’s Clean Cars and Trucks Standards. The climate crisis is here and only getting worse. The Endangerment Finding is foundational to EPA’s ability to protect us from the emissions that cause global warming—and the health of our families, communities, and future generations is what’s at stake.
I’m a mom of two boys—a 4-year-old and a 17-month-old. Nothing is more important to me than my children and protecting them is my first and foremost responsibility. Before they were born, I was living in New York City with my wife when Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on lower Manhattan. A 2021 study published in Nature found that climate change made the storm worse, finding that over $8 billion of Sandy’s damages can be attributed to global warming caused by human activity. Hurricane Sandy drove us from our apartment and sent us into a sheer panic when we realized that losing power for days on end ran the risk of spoiling my very expensive refrigerated medication that I could not pay $10,000 out of pocket to replace. The climate crisis was at our front doorstep.
Nearly 13 years later, the climate crisis came to the doorstep of my hometown of Los Angeles- three close friends and family lost their homes to the LA wildfires. Climate science is clear that global warming is creating the conditions for supercharged wildfires like the ones Los Angeles and so many other cities
have experienced in recent years.
Extensive scientific evidence has already found the emissions that cause global warming do indeed endanger the public health and welfare of current and future generations because they supercharge dangerous weather—including massive heat waves. It’s EPA’s clear responsibility to protect people in the U.S. from the health impacts of climate change. What’s more is that the Endangerment Finding supports the EPA’s regulation of methane and other climate pollutants from a variety of sources, including transportation, power plants, and the oil and gas sector. These multisector protections are critical safeguards for public health and the environment.
Once again, I urge the EPA not to revoke the Endangerment Finding or greenhouse gas limits for tailpipe pollution. It is EPA’s legal responsibility to protect us from dangerous greenhouse gas pollution.
