On World Asthma Day 2023, Moms Clean Air Force, Sierra Club, and Clean Up MidAm hosted a press event calling on MidAmerican Energy to transition away from dirty coal energy by 2030 for the health of Iowans.
Coal-fired power plants are an enormous source of toxic pollution. Air pollution from coal-fired power plants is linked to a number of health dangers, including asthma, cancer, heart and lung ailments, neurological problems, dementia, and developmental and cognitive delays. In Muscatine County alone, where communities are exposed to pollution from two coal plants, there are 598 pediatric asthma cases and 2,968 adult asthma cases.
