Harrisburg, PA — Pennsylvania Moms extend their gratitude to Governor Josh Shapiro, who announced his plan on Friday to flex $153 million in federal highway funds to SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority), buying the legislature time to find a long term funding plan for mass transit. This action by the Governor will help avoid significant fare increases and drastic reductions in service that were planned for January.
“My family does not own a car, and relies entirely on the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) for transportation to school, work, doctors appointments, errands, and more,” says Moms Clean Air Force’s Pennsylvania Field Organizer Brooke Petry. “In addition to providing critical access to services for families across the region, public transit is one of our most impactful means to reduce transportation sector pollution and address the climate crisis. Together with opportunities like the Advanced Clean Trucks rule, the growth of electric vehicle availability, and federal rulemakings to clean up transportation pollution, public transit will continue to play a starring role in the effort to clean up the air in our communities and ensure a livable planet for our children. I felt immense relief and gratitude when I saw the Governor’s announcement, and I know that my relief is shared by families across the region. Thank you, Governor Shapiro.”
