WHAT: On April 23, Moms Clean Air Force will host a virtual conversation on how the rapid expansion of data centers could endanger people’s health, featuring Dr. Michael Cork, an environmental health scientist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and founder of EmPower Analytics Group.
Data centers are multiplying – and so is the energy needed to power them. Many data centers rely on fossil fuel generators that release harmful air pollution linked to asthma, heart and lung disease, cancer, and premature death. Dr. Cork’s research examines how emissions from large-scale infrastructure like data centers translate into measurable health and economic costs. One of his analyses estimated $53–$99 million in annual health damages from a single data center powered by on-site gas turbines in Northern Virginia. Thursday’s conversation will touch on this analysis as well as those of previous and ongoing proposed data center projects.
Join us to better understand the hidden health costs of data center energy demand, and why getting this right is critical for protecting our communities.
