The Industry-Backed Bills Would Increase Dangerous Air Pollution and Put Children’s Health at Risk

Washington, DC—The House Committee on Energy & Commerce is expected to mark up two bills today that would deceive consumers about recycling and incentivize plastic incineration, increasing harmful air pollution and threatening children’s health. The Recycled Materials Attribution Act (HR 7502) makes it easier to deceive consumers about whether a product actually contains recycled material. The PACK Act (HR 6832) preempts protective state truth-in-labeling laws.
Moms Clean Air Force’s Director of Federal Policy Melody Reis released the following statement ahead of the markup:
“The Recycled Materials Attribution Act (RMAA) and the PACK Act aren’t helping consumers. Rather, they’re helping corporate polluters deceive the public about recycling, all while increasing toxic air pollution and global heating. These bills are part of the plastics industry’s efforts to mislead the public into believing that it’s solving the plastics crisis while continuing the dramatic escalation of plastics production. RMAA and the PACK Act are greenwashing bills meant to promote plastic incineration—an extremely polluting process—and to protect plastics industry profits at the expense of public health and our climate.”
