Moms Clean Air Force will join Physicians for Social Responsibility Pennsylvania and the Breathe Collaborative for a tour of Shell’s recently constructed ethane cracker, its associated infrastructure, and neighboring sites along a heavily industrialized stretch of the Ohio River. The tour will start in Pittsburgh and include bus transportation to the ethane cracker site in Beaver County.
Once it starts up, this 800-acre site will convert the region’s fracked gas into an estimated 1.6 million metric tons of plastic pellets annually and will be one of the largest sources of air and water pollution in the region, which has prompted extensive community watchdogging and monitoring efforts. The fossil fuel industry once boasted the possibility of building several ethane crackers in the Ohio River Valley to convert the region’s fracked gas into plastic, but as of yet, this is the only project that has been built.
