Toxic methane emissions and other pollutants from oil and gas production are associated with negative health outcomes such as higher rates of preterm birth, low birth weight, and congenital heart disease. Children who live within a half mile of an oil and gas site are also are at risk for higher rates of childhood asthma and hospitalization from asthma. Additionally, methane has more than 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years after it reaches the atmosphere and is responsible for 25% of the human-produced warming we experience today. In this webinar, we will cover methane solutions, including new safeguards from the US EPA, regulations to prevent methane pipeline leaks (PHMSA), the federal Methane Emissions Reduction Program (MERP), and state implementation plans for Ohio and Pennsylvania.
