The “Lethal Legislators” Supporting the TRAIN Act

BY ON September 26, 2011

Dominique BrowningIf you’ve been wondering about who cares more about protecting polluters than protecting children, here’s an excerpt from our friends over at NRDC; a post on who voted for the TRAIN wreck of a bill, aimed right at our children’s health. Join Moms Clean Air Force and take urgent action: Tell your Senator to vote down this bill.

FROM NRDC: Here’s a rundown of the top ten lethal legislators, sorted by how much they’ve taken from polluters during their congressional careers. The contributions data comes from OpenSecrets.org and includes donors connected to the utility, oil and gas, coal and mining sectors.

  1. Joe Barton (TX-6) has taken over $3,000,000 from polluter and supports Lethal Legislation that could put as many as 81,200 lives at risk.
  2. John Shimkus (IL-19) has taken over $939,000 from polluters and supports Lethal Legislation that could put as many as 56,200 lives at risk.
  3. Pete Sessions (TX-32) has taken over $927,000 and supports Lethal Legislation that could put as many as 25,000 lives at risk.
  4. Fred Upton (MI-6) has taken over $863,000 and supports Lethal Legislation that could put as many as 33,450 lives at risk.
  5. Shelley Moore Capito (WV-2) has taken over $838,000 from polluters and supports Lethal Legislation that could put as many as 81,200 lives at risk.
  6. Dan Boren (OK-2) has taken over $836,000 from polluters and supports Lethal Legislation that could put as many as 47,750 lives at risk.
  7. John A. Sullivan (OK-1) has taken over $833,000 from polluters and supports Lethal Legislation that could put as many as 67,450 lives at risk.
  8. Kay Granger (TX-12) has taken over $789,000 from polluters and supports Lethal Legislation that could put as many as 58,450 lives at risk.
  9. Gene Green (TX-29) has taken over $757,000 from polluters and supports Lethal Legislation that could put as many as 33,450 lives at risk.
  10. K. Michael Conaway (TX-11) has taken over $746,000 from polluters and supports Lethal Legislation that could put as many as 25,000 lives at risk.
OHIO moms should be prepared to speak up passionately to protect their children; Rep. Bob Latta (OH-5) joined Ed Whitfield from Kentucky to add an amendment to an already bad bill that made it far worse:
“Rep. Bob Latta (OH-5) supports measures that would increase pollution from cement kilns, power plants and industrial boilers and cost 81,000 Americans their lives. Over 250,000 kids in Ohio with asthma would also be at greater risk for more frequent and dangerous asthma attacks. Note that Rep Latta is also pushing an amendment to TRAIN that would allow polluters to have sway over scientists in setting safety standards for pollution. I should mention that according to the site, Latta has taken at least $100,000 from polluters during his congressional career.”
We can’t take the Senate vote for granted. Let your Senator know that you are watching. If we don’t fight for our children’s health, who will?
