We face a new challenge.
I admit it: I am obsessed with what we were calling “fracking pollution” — until I realized that was way too narrow a label. We’re really talking about dangerous methane leaking at every stage of oil and gas development, long after the drill has done its fracking.
Your work supporting curbing emissions from future sources in the oil and gas infrastructure was incredible — and we thank you! Moms Clean Air Force sent EPA 118,148 signatures from moms and dads, aunts, uncles and grandparents, in support of their first methane rule.
Now we must turn our attention to existing sources of methane leaks: 100% of the problem today.
Why does methane matter so much? It is the primary component of natural gas and a major contributor to global warming — methane is 84 times more powerful than carbon in the first two decades after its release.
Such leaks are a waste of a precious energy resource, and allow other toxic pollutants to leak out with them, further endangering human health.
The “care of our common home.” Pope Francis’ words still ring in my heart, especially with the holiday season upon us. Thoughts of care, joy, love, and gratitude are on my mind.
With all the work she has done to clean our air, EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy has clearly taken the words of Pope Francis to heart.
By bringing carbon and methane emissions under control, we will go a long way in slowing climate change, protecting the health of our families, and stopping the waste of energy.
Let’s get those leaks plugged. Fast.
And here’s to your health and happiness during the upcoming holidays!
