For Shame! Gina McCarthy Nomination Boycotted

Republicans on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, scheduled to vote today on the nomination of Gina McCarthy as the new head of EPA, boycotted the procedure. That denied the committee the quorum it needed for the EPA nominee vote. This is sheer obstructionism and game-playing. It is inappropriate behavior.

My Air Gets An F

You don’t want to see a bad grade on your child’s report card, but does the air she breathes pass the test? Is your family, like mine, among the 42 percent of Americans who live in places where the air itself is dangerous to breathe, according to the American Lung Association’s State of the Air …

What's Better? More Pollution, Or Less Pollution? (video)

Moms Clean Air Force has created  a series of ads with the Environmental Defense Fund to express gratitude for senators in Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Virginia. Their opposition to anti-Clean Air Act amendments during Senate budget debates in March that would have blocked the EPA’s historic Carbon Pollution Standard, the Mercury and Air Toxics …

Politics As Usual At Gina McCarthy Hearings

The April 11th confirmation hearing of nominee Gina McCarthy to head the Environmental Protection Agency, was a robust exchange encapsulating the primary points of view consistently espoused on each side of the aisle. Questioned were the efficacy of the department, it’s standards, the alleged conflict between public health and the economy, and whether there is …

Repurpose Earth Day

Repurpose Earth Day

Feeling a little bullish about Earth Day? Me too. I'm full of questions… Do we still need Earth Day? I remember the first Earth Day. We were told, “Make every day Earth Day.” Did we? At the time, our cars slurped leaded gas, power plants belched out smoke and smog without recourse, and our rivers …

Interview: Protect Our Winters

I’m a skier and I speak for the snow. Like the Lorax who speaks for the trees, my internal snow globe is worried. Skiers, snowboarders — and families, depend on powdery frozen water to feed their winter souls. Flakes shook up the skies a few times this winter here in the Northeast, but the ski …

Documerica: Reflections On Air Pollution

This was written by MCAF's Social Media Director, Shaun Dakin: I have a particular fondness for photography exhibits. So when I read the National Archives was opening up their DOCUMERICA archive to the public here in Washington, DC, I jumped at a chance to go. As I quietly danced (the sounds of the 70’s echoed …

Sequester Dirties The Air

Sequester Dirties The Air

The sequester is here. I outlined in a previous post exactly what we had to look forward to, and now indiscriminate cuts are being unleashed upon the public straight across the board, delivered with a hatchet as opposed to a scalpel. I reached out to Sen. Tom Carper, who serves on the Environment and Public …

Making The Clean Air Act Even Stronger

Making The Clean Air Act Even Stronger

Because I am capable of losing myself for hours at the computer, staring into the screen, I have had to train myself to look up and focus on a far-away point out the window. My rental has extraordinary city views, because of a quirk in the layout of the avenues — I see a skyline …
