Earth Day: Start Them When They're Young

I can't get my son to stop using paper plates and cups. I really don't blame him because when he lived at home we used them a lot. With seven people living in our household, I thought using paper plates would save time (from washing so many dishes), and money (as we would not be …

When It Comes to Clean Air, I Am My Sister's Keeper

I remember when my son was first diagnosed with asthma. I was a single mom living over 600 miles away from my family and friends. He was in the 2nd or 3rd grade, and it seemed like he was always getting sick. The nurse would call me at work and say: “Please come pick up …

Proposed Power Plant Divides Community

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about the fond memories I have of crabbing and fishing with my father as a child in the lakes and rivers in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. I expressed concerns about my kids not being able to continue those same traditions due to toxic pollution in …

Small Changes Make Major Impacts In 2012

It’s a new year, which means many people have set goals and new resolutions. Family Traditions That Come Back To Bite Us

I grew up in the Tidewater Area of Virginia. Our family loves to go to the beach, and we absolutely love seafood. We can not have a family function without fried fish and blue crabs. We don’t purchase frozen fish fillets from the supermarket. We either catch them ourselves, or we purchase them from a …
