Schools are so important to our children’s health. Of course, school is where our children learn. But school is also where our children grow and develop, physically. Our children (and their teachers) spend 30-40 hours in a school building per week. That’s why the environmental factors at school can significantly impact our children’s health.
Green Apple Day of Service is an international event – this year on September 28, 2013 – that gets parents, students, and community members involved in improving the environment in and around their children’s school. Green Apple Day of Service projects include everything from garden planting to energy audits. We are especially excited about the special Green Apple Day of Service asthma project that Moms Clean Air Force has put together: Learn About Asthma Triggers at School.
We’ve updated some of our best asthma and air quality resources for this event, including:
- Asthma Triggers: A guide for Parents, Doctors, and Nurses
- Armed with the Facts on School Air
- The Healthier Classroom Checklist: Environmental Health Guidance for Teachers
You can distribute these to parents and teachers, and work with your school to reduce asthma triggers together.
Sign up to host a project, or find an existing project near you, at www.mygreenapple.org/dayofservice. When naming your project, be sure to include the phrase “MCAF Event.” Special bonus: The Center for Green Schools is offering every teacher or parent who registers a Moms Clean Air Force Green Apple Day of Service event a transferrable, free registration for a teacher to take the US Green Building Council’s Green Classroom Professional Certificate Course.
